What Is Colorbond Steel?

Colorbond is a registered trademark of BlueScope Steel, Australia's largest steel manufacturer. First introduced to the Australian market in 1966, Colorbond steel is a pre-painted, high-strength steel product that has been specifically engineered, tested, and refined over nearly six decades to withstand the unique climatic conditions found across the Australian continent — from the tropical humidity of Queensland and the Northern Territory, to the salt-laden coastal air of Sydney and Perth, to the extreme UV radiation and wildfire risk zones of regional Victoria and South Australia.

The product is not simply painted steel. Colorbond undergoes a complex multi-stage manufacturing process that includes a zinc/aluminium alloy metallic coating (Zincalume®), a pre-treatment layer that improves adhesion and corrosion resistance, a primer layer that provides a uniform base, and finally a baked-on thermoset paint layer in the specified colour. Each of these layers works synergistically to deliver a product that genuinely outperforms any comparable steel product on the global market in Australian conditions.

Today, Colorbond steel is the single most widely used fencing material in Australia. It is estimated that over 80% of new residential fencing installed in suburban Australia uses Colorbond steel — a testament to its real-world performance, broad colour range, and the confidence builders, architects, and homeowners have developed in the brand over many decades.

The Multi-Layer Steel Technology

Understanding what makes Colorbond steel perform so consistently begins with its layered construction. Starting from the steel substrate, the manufacturing process applies the following sequential layers:

• Base Steel: High-strength steel substrate typically 0.42mm or 0.48mm BMT for fencing applications — providing rigidity and resistance to impact deformation.
• Zincalume® Coating: A zinc/aluminium/magnesium alloy coating applied via continuous hot-dip process. This alloy layer provides the primary corrosion barrier, sacrificially protecting the steel substrate even at cut edges and scratches.
• Pre-Treatment Layer: A chromate-free conversion coating that passivates the metallic surface and dramatically improves adhesion of subsequent paint layers.
• Primer Coat: A corrosion-inhibitive primer that provides a uniform, chemically bonded base for the colour coat and adds a further barrier against moisture ingress.
• Topcoat / Colour Layer: A high-performance thermoset polyester paint, baked on at elevated temperatures to cure into a hard, flexible film that resists chalking, chipping, and UV degradation for decades.

The result is a product with a total coating thickness of approximately 25–30 microns, a corrosion warranty of up to 10 years in standard environments and up to 15 years in severe marine environments (within 200m of breaking surf), and a colour warranty of up to 10 years covering excessive fading or chipping under normal conditions.

Colorbond Fence Profiles Explained

Trimclad® Profile

The most widely installed Colorbond fence profile in Australia. Trimclad features a bold corrugated rib pattern that provides exceptional panel rigidity and a clean, contemporary appearance. Its profile design sheds water efficiently, prevents dirt accumulation in corrugations, and performs very well in high-wind zones where panel flexion and lift-out can be problems with flatter profiles. The Trimclad profile is our standard recommendation for most residential and commercial applications.

Custom Orb® (Corrugated) Profile

The classic rounded corrugation of the Custom Orb profile evokes Australian architectural heritage — it is the profile used on heritage agricultural buildings, classic Queenslanders, and traditional Australian homes for over a century. Now available in the full Colorbond colour range, Custom Orb fencing delivers tremendous nostalgic appeal while meeting modern performance standards. An excellent choice for properties with a heritage aesthetic or in character-sensitive streetscapes.

Multirib® Profile

The Multirib profile features a series of fine, closely spaced ribs that create a smooth, almost flat visual appearance from a distance. This contemporary profile suits modern architectural styles — particularly homes with rendered masonry, expressed structural steel, or large-format glazing — where a flat fence panel complements the clean geometry of the architecture. Available in all 22 Colorbond colours including the ultra-popular Cool Colours range.

Good Neighbour® System

The innovative Good Neighbour system is unique in that it presents the same finished, coloured face to both sides of the fence. Traditional Colorbond installations have a "good side" and a structural side showing the rail and post system. Where a fence borders a shared boundary, both neighbours naturally want to see the good side. The Good Neighbour system solves this elegantly, ensuring both properties enjoy equal presentation from their respective sides.

Our Installation Standards

A Colorbond fence is only as good as its installation. We have seen many properties where inadequately installed fences — with posts too shallow, rails undersized, and panels incorrectly lapped — have failed within years due to wind uplift, post movement, or panel corrosion at improperly cut edges. Our installation methodology is built around preventing every one of these failure modes.

All structural posts are set in concrete to a minimum depth of 600mm in standard soils, and 750mm in reactive clay soils or soft fill. We use SL72 steel posts minimum for all standard installations, and upgrade to heavier sections in exposed or high-wind locations. All concrete is mixed on-site to the correct consistency to ensure full and uniform post embedment without voids. Posts are checked for vertical plumb on two perpendicular planes before the concrete sets.

All cut edges — the most vulnerable point of any steel sheet product — are treated with a zinc-rich cold galvanising compound before installation to seal the cut and prevent rust migration from exposed steel substrate. This single step, routinely skipped by less rigorous installers, is one of the primary reasons our fences maintain their appearance and corrosion resistance over the long term.

Colorbond Fence Maintenance Guide

One of Colorbond's most celebrated advantages is its minimal maintenance requirement — but "low maintenance" does not mean "no maintenance." A small amount of periodic attention will keep your fence looking pristine for its full service life and protect the manufacturer's warranty conditions.

• Wash the fence down with clean fresh water and a soft brush or cloth every 6–12 months — more frequently in coastal environments or areas exposed to industrial fallout.
• Pay particular attention to areas sheltered from rain, as these areas miss natural rain washing and can accumulate corrosive deposits over time.
• Remove any organic material — leaves, soil, mulch — that packs against the base of the fence, as prolonged contact with wet organic matter accelerates corrosion at the panel base.
• Treat any scratches or surface damage promptly with Colorbond Touch Up Paint in the matching colour to seal the exposed steel substrate before rust can initiate.
• Avoid placing garden sprinkler heads so they spray directly onto the fence, as constant wet-dry cycling degrades the paint surface over time.
• Never use abrasive cleaners, steel wool, or high-pressure washers — these damage the paint surface and void the manufacturer's coating warranty.

With this simple maintenance regime, a well-installed Colorbond fence should provide 25 to 30+ years of service before requiring replacement — making it by far the most cost-effective boundary treatment over the long term when compared to timber, which typically requires replacement every 10–15 years and substantial ongoing maintenance costs in between.

Permits, Council Compliance & Regulations

In most Australian states, a standard residential boundary fence up to 2.0m in height does not require a building permit, provided it is not located within a bushfire management overlay, heritage overlay, or flood zone. However, regulations vary significantly between local government areas, and it is always our practice to verify the applicable requirements for your specific property before commencing any installation work.

For fences above 2.0m, fences within 3m of a road frontage, pool barrier fencing, and any fencing within heritage or bushfire overlay areas, permits and/or heritage approvals will typically be required. We manage the permit application process on behalf of our clients as part of our full-service offering, liaising directly with your local council to obtain necessary approvals efficiently and correctly before any works commence.

The Dividing Fences Act governs boundary fence disputes between neighbouring landowners in most Australian states. Under this legislation, the cost of a standard dividing fence is generally shared equally between adjoining property owners. We are experienced in facilitating the neighbour notification process, mediating cost-sharing arrangements, and ensuring all dividing fence works comply with the relevant state legislation.

Colorbond vs. Timber vs. Vinyl Fencing

Homeowners researching fencing options frequently compare Colorbond, treated pine timber, and uPVC vinyl fencing. Each has its place, but Colorbond consistently demonstrates the strongest combination of initial cost, long-term cost of ownership, durability, and aesthetic flexibility for Australian conditions.

Treated pine timber offers a lower initial cost but carries substantial hidden costs: regular painting or staining every 3–5 years, board replacement as timber weathers and splits, ongoing risk of termite damage even in treated timber, and eventual full replacement after 10–15 years. When the full lifecycle cost is calculated over 25 years, a timber fence typically costs 2.5 to 3 times more than the equivalent Colorbond installation.

uPVC vinyl fencing offers a low-maintenance, rot-proof alternative, but performs poorly in extreme Australian heat — high ambient temperatures cause vinyl to expand, warp, and become brittle over time. In bushfire-prone areas, vinyl fencing fails to meet the non-combustible requirements mandated by the Building Code of Australia. Colorbond steel is non-combustible, Class A fire rated, and approved for use in the highest bushfire attack level (BAL-FZ) zones — making it the only responsible choice in fire-risk areas across Australia.
