This is a straightforward task that most homeowners can undertake themselves in a single afternoon.

Steel and aluminium pergolas require significantly less maintenance. An annual wash with a garden hose and mild detergent is typically all that is needed to keep powder-coated surfaces looking fresh and to remove any salt deposits in coastal environments. Inspecting fixings for any signs of corrosion every few years is also recommended, with replacement of any compromised hardware as required.

All pergolas benefit from keeping gutters and drainage systems clear of leaves and debris, particularly in autumn. Blocked gutters can cause water to pond and eventually lead to premature deterioration of roofing materials and structural elements. Choosing the Right Builder

Look for a builder with verifiable experience and a substantial portfolio of completed projects, appropriate licensing and insurance, transparent pricing with a detailed written quotation, and genuine references from satisfied clients.

Beware of unusually low quotes, which often indicate corners will be cut — whether in material quality, engineering standards, or the standard of workmanship.
